South Africa ranked eighth among the biggest wine-producing countries on the planet, ahead of Germany and Portugal, behind Australia, Chile and Argentina. In 2021 South Africa produced 911-million litres of wine from 1.5-million tonnes crushed grapes produced from vineyards covering 122 000 hectares on 2 613 farms where grapes are grown for wine production. Wine is produced at 536 wineries of which 224 are small boutique wineries crushing fewer than 100 tonnes of grapes and 37 large scale wineries crushing over 10 000 tonnes of grapes. There are a total of 43 co-operative wineries, joint ventures (5 to 100 members) between farmers and wine producers where farmers deliver grapes to the cellar who supplies the facilities to produce the wine. Co-operatives were important in the early development of the wine industry in South Africa when grape growers combined efforts to ensure financial stability. KWV was the first such co-operative, established in 1920s, with 5 000 members at some point and controlled 70% of wine exports. Although the growth in the wine industry meant that co-operatives made way for wine estates and wineries, the smaller wine producers are still organised into co-operatives to compete in the saturated wine market.
Religion played an integral part in the development of Worcester as a town in the early years. Not only was several churches built in town but heading to the downtown end of Worcester there is as much character in the mosque and the old synagogue in Durban Street. A maternity clinic, run by Roman Catholic nuns, were situated on the corner of Church and Fairbairn Streets, where The Pines lifestyle clinic is situated today with the nunnery located on the premises where The Habit Guest House is today. Other historic religious buildings include the Congregational Church (next to Beckhuis restaurant and guesthouse), Rhenish Missionary Church and School on the corner of Adderley and High Street and the Dutch Reformed Church in Church Street. Although the new town was still underdeveloped, the congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church (Moederkerk) was already established in Worcester by 1821. The Dutch Reformed Church building on Church Square dates back to 1821-24 and is a national monument. This church is a particularly beautiful example of Gothic revival architecture, complete with a peaked steeple made of tin that was added later on to the square tower. The church has an open tower with two bells which […]

WORCESTER is known to many, particularly those from Cape Town, as the town on the other side of the Huguenot tunnel or over the mountain, renowned for its sweltering summers and its picturesque, snowy mountains during winter. While the significance of the town is often lost in modern-day life the history of the town and region is fascinating. The area that became known as the Breede River Valley was inhabited by indigenous hunter gather and pastorals groups, the San and Khoi, before the arrival of Europeans. The San and Khoi were followed by “trek” (pioneering) farmers that brought their herds to the Breede River Valley for grazing and later settled permanently when loan farms were established. Establishment of a new town Worcester was founded in 1820 after the then Governor of the Cape Colony, Lord Charles Somerset, instructed J.H. Fisher, the magistrate of Tulbagh at that time, to find a suitable area for the establishment of a new magisterial seat between the towns of Tulbagh and Graaff Reinet. Fisher was so impressed by the area of present-day Worcester that he subsequently recommended this area to Lord Somerset. Lord Somerset named the new town in honour of his eldest brother, the […]

Getting into the guesthouse industry, is probably the best thing that could have happened to me career wise. When the heart calls you follow and I did just that. Following my heart to the heart of the Breede River Valley I bought a 3 bedroom-1 bathroom house in 2019 and started the slow process of municipal rezoning during the 2 Covid-19 years. When permission was finally granted at the end of 2021 I set-off to join Wynand, my fiancé in Worcester, a journey of some 1 200km, leaving an academic career and the security of the life of a university lecturer behind to start a new life adventure. My dream to convert the stately old house in the peaceful tree-lined Paglande neighbourhood into a guesthouse took dedication and all my project management skills with a good doze of patience. After the dirt has settled and the swan that I envisioned in my mind started to take shape it was time for me to jump in to refine the shell that was created. I found an avenue to release my bottled-up creativity into up-cycling old furniture pieces and meticulously combining old and new into French meets Karoo farm style décor providing […]
